Project Context and Details
I organized the Angry Asian Girls Association (AAGA), an artist collective
dedicated to planning and executing protests against the Berlin exhibition of Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki. AAGA highlighted the troubling fact that C/O Berlin, a renowned contemporary photography gallery known for its advocacy of progress and freedom, hosted his solo exhibition despite revelations from models that his photographs were exploitative. We issued a formal letter of protest to C/O Berlin and organized a rally in front of the gallery on the opening day of the exhibition. During the protest, we distributed a leaflet featuring a statement from model Kaori, who had exposed Araki’s exploitation with her consent. Members of AAGA also disseminated relay works criticizing the exhibition through social media.
